Alycia Baumgardner Vs. Bo Mi Re Shin Breakdown
Unified super featherweight champion Alycia Baumgardner will defend her titles against Bo Mi Re Shin on April 17, as we preview this fight.
Baumgardner returns to the ring following a successful 2025 campaign. The WBA, WBO and IBF champion secured wins over Jennifer Miranda and Leila Beaudoin in her last two bouts. In a significant move for the sport, the Baumgardner-Shin bout will be contested under the same rules as men’s championship boxing—ten three-minute rounds rather than the traditional two-minute rounds for women.
Shin is known for her high-volume punching and durability, having most recently pushed Caroline Dubois to a close decision in late 2025. Despite losing that fight via a majority decision, she bounced back with a win over Tywarna Campbell last November.
Pre-Fight
"New York sets the tone for boxing’s biggest nights. Becoming undisputed there was monumental, and the fans have embraced me from the beginning. Every fight for me is about elevation; I’m here to dominate and continue building something that lasts beyond belts. I’m really excited to have the opportunity to showcase my talents on such a big occasion in New York City," Baumgardner said
"I honestly spent a lot of time wondering whether I should try something else. But nothing is more thrilling than knocking an opponent down in the ring. I kept my head down and stuck to one thing, and now I’ve finally gotten a chance to fight for a world title. Since the fight was arranged earlier this year, I’ve been training more than five hours a day and going to sleep each night picturing the bout against Baumgardner," Shin stated
The Approach
Baumgardner will likely use her footwork to keep the fight in the center of the ring, utilizing a jab to disrupt Shin’s forward momentum. Since Shin is a volume puncher, Baumgardner will look for "check hooks" and straight rights the moment Shin enters the pocket. The extra minute per round allows her to be more patient, picking her spots for maximum impact.
Tactically, Shin needs to cut off the ring and force Baumgardner against the ropes, working the body relentlessly to sap the champion’s explosive energy. By targeting the midsection early, Shin can potentially slow Baumgardner’s feet by the championship rounds. If Shin can maintain a pace of 80+ punches per round across the longer three-minute intervals, she may find success by simply outworking Baumgardner.
