Roy Jones Jr. Apologizes For His Controversial Corner Instructions

Roy Jones Jr. has addressed the fallout from his corner instructions to Kevin Newman II, which has since become a viral talking point across social media.

The tension peaked during the early stages of Newman’s super middleweight battle against Elijah Garcia. Sensing his fighter was being too passive and allowing Garcia to dictate, Jones delivered some harsh words: "Go out and fight that motherf—– or don’t fight’, going on to tell his fighter to ‘fight or quit boxing."

Following the verbal thrashing, Newman II (19-3-1) noticeably increased his punch volume and began catching Garcia with counter-uppercuts that shifted the momentum of the contest. Newman rallied in the championship rounds to secure a massive majority decision upset (98-92, 96-94, 95-95), handing Garcia the second defeat of his career. The Hall of Famer, though, offered an apology for the intensity of the exchange.

“Hey, what’s happening awesome fans of mine. I just wanted to come on this morning to be apologetic for the explicit language that I was forced to use over the weekend. The common approach was not getting the job done and my job as a coach is to get the job done so I had to do what I had to do.”

“It wasn’t what I wanted to do but it was necessary and it got the job done, so I apologize for the explicit language, I’ll try to make sure it doesn’t happen again but I can’t make no promises because I love boxing,” Jones said
